update
Thus far GWO has provided 4 organizations and 25 individuals with a fully subsidized opportunity to use video as an effective and affordable tool for self-advocacy. The following are 5 short videos created during this program to date:
˙ Galiano Island Conservancy: “Mystery at Laughlin Lake” (10 minutes). This video on a land restoration project happening on Galiano Island has been broadcast on “the New VI” TV station, and screened at several public meetings. It has also been sent to several current and prospective funders to provide them with a clearer picture of the project they are seeking monies for.
˙ Check Your Head: “It’s Not Brainwashing” (24 minutes). This video documents the anti-globalization educational outreach Check Your Head does in BC high schools. It also contains a self-reflexive portrayal of what it means to be an anti-globalization activist and how the hierarchies of power that are challenged in the public sphere influence interpersonal dynamics in the private sphere. It was screened at the Video In, in September 2002. Check Your Head use s this video to help orient new volunteers.
˙ Anti-Patti-Project – “Suck My Patriarchy” (8 minutes). This video examines patriarchy, sexism, and rape in our society - both in its overt and subtle forms. This sassy, artful and “in your face” video has been designed as a provocative tool for educational outreach.
˙ Tribal Harmonics – This organization did a 90 second piece about the dance movement for broadcast on their web site.
˙ Purple Thistle Centre – Four Purple Thistle participants are currently in the process of creating a short video about “de-schooling”—alternative educational models. This video is intended to target youth whose needs aren’t being met by the mainstream school system.
We are currently in the process of recruiting for the next round of projects We will do another round in April and plan to complete the project in it’s entirety in late June/early July. The project will end with a screening of all of the GWO projects. Get all the details and an application form accesstomedia.org/urban
